Chinook Salmon

Often called the “King” or "Spring" — is the fish that defines West Coast salmon Fishing

The Chinook salmon is the largest and most powerful of the Pacific salmon species, built for strength and long, blistering runs. When a Chinook hits, it’s not subtle. The rod loads hard, the reel starts screaming, and suddenly, it’s just you and raw power connected by a line.

Their weight and stamina create a battle that feels heavy, deliberate, and relentless. It’s the kind of fight that leaves your arms shaking and your heart pounding.

But Chinook salmon are more than just muscle. They carry history, tradition, and anticipation. For many anglers, they’re the fish that started it all, and the reason boats leave the marina before sunrise and why stories get told long after the season ends.

Hooking a Chinook isn’t just catching a fish. It’s feeling the full force of the ocean on the end of your line.

And for most people, that’s exactly why they go salmon fishing.

A large chinook salmon that was caught and released. Watching them swim away is a special feeling

Coho SAlmon

The Coho salmon are aggressive fish that bring steady action and exciting fights. They’re quick to strike and often make fast runs, keeping anglers engaged from the moment the rod goes off.

Unlike heavier salmon that tend to stay deep, Coho are famous for their movement near the surface. They’ll change direction suddenly and are well known for their jumps and head shakes, adding an extra level of challenge to the fight.

Their combination of speed and strength makes them a favourite for anglers who enjoy a more active battle. Whether you’re new to salmon fishing or experienced on the water, Coho provide consistent action and memorable moments

Lingcod

The Lingcod is a true structure-dweller, living among rocky reefs, kelp beds, and ledges where it waits with quiet patience. They’re aggressive, territorial predators, and when they decide to strike, they commit.

Lingcod hit hard and head straight for the bottom. The fight is powerful and deliberate, with heavy runs and strong head shakes as they try to dive back into the rocks. It’s a different kind of battle than salmon — more of a tug-of-war — where steady pressure and solid technique win the day.

Beyond the fight, lingcod are also one of the most prized fish for the table. Their firm, white fillets are as memorable as the catch itself, making them a favourite for anglers who want both action and exceptional eating quality.

Spot Prawns

There’s a reason local anglers get excited when spot prawn season opens.

The Spot prawn is the largest prawn species on the West Coast and widely considered the best-tasting shellfish in our waters. Found in deep coastal inlets and along the continental shelf, they’re harvested using baited traps set on the ocean floor.

While it’s not a rod-and-reel battle like salmon or lingcod, prawn fishing has its own kind of anticipation. Hauling up a trap from hundreds of feet below and seeing it loaded with bright, lively spot prawns is always a rewarding moment. It’s hands-on, interactive, and a great experience for families and groups of all ages.

What truly sets spot prawns apart, though, is their quality. Sweet, firm, and incredibly fresh straight from the ocean, they’re a highlight on the table and one of the most sought-after seasonal catches on the coast.

For guests looking to add something special to their day on the water, spot prawns are the perfect complement to a fishing trip. A true West Coast delicacy and an experience in their own right.

Dungeness Crab

Few coastal traditions are as iconic as pulling up a crab trap full of Dungeness.

The Dungeness crab is one of the most prized shellfish species on the West Coast, known for its sweet, tender meat and impressive size. Found along sandy bottoms and near eelgrass beds, they’re harvested using baited traps set in productive coastal waters.

Crabbing is simple, hands-on, and rewarding. There’s a certain excitement in hauling up a trap and seeing those broad, copper-colored shells waiting inside. It’s an experience that’s easy for everyone to take part in — whether you’re a seasoned angler or trying it for the first time.

Beyond the fun on the water, Dungeness crab is hard to beat at the table. Fresh, ocean-caught crab is a true West Coast staple and often becomes the highlight meal of the trip.

For guests looking to round out their day, adding crabbing to your charter is a great way to experience another side of coastal fishing — relaxed, memorable, and delicious.
